God's Joy - A Great Feast

Posted on 12/17/2017 by SuperUser Account in Isaiah John

In 1992, Zone 21 in Guatemala City was a refugee camp for families displaced from years of civil war. The zone was an area of dirt - - just an open area - - with these sheds or shacks dotted all across. The shacks were constructed of tin, cardboard and plastic. Most were 4’ x 6’ and “housed” 6-8 people. They had dirt floors, no doors (except for maybe a piece of fabric or cardboard). Water was stored in huge metal drums located sporadically around the camp; the water was green with algae. Kids were everywhere, many with no shoes, unclean faces, no balls or toys of any kind other than sticks and what they could find scattered about them.

"May You Be Well"

A couple of months ago, our Movies That Matter film was a bit of an odd one titled Lars and the Real Girl. It was the story of a man who was filled with fear and sadness and who drew very much on the relationships within and power of community in order to not be afraid or sad any longer; or, at least less so. At one point, this main character – Lars – asks his brother how he knew he had grown up, how he knew he “was a man”. His brother Gus answered, “There's still a kid inside but you grow up when you decide to do right, okay, and not what's right for you, what's right for everybody, even when it hurts.”

"Be It Known"

It is Advent. Maybe you, like me, are glad it is Advent. I’ve been listening to Christmas carols for a while now. Just the day after Thanksgiving was, families all over our neighborhood were out putting up lights and blow up snowmen and such - - even an oversized inflatable holiday Minion just a few houses down from us. The first Christmas card came. It is such a fun and fascinating time of the year. And I welcome it.

The Power of Positive Deviance

In 1990, aid worker Jerry Sternin had been sent to open a new office of Save the Children in Vietnam. The government of the nation had invited Save the Children to open an office, yet when he arrived there, the foreign minister let him know that not everyone was pleased at his presence. “You have six months to make a difference,” he was told.

A Life Worthy of Our Calling

Posted on 7/30/2017 by SuperUser Account in John Ephesians

“There are times in our lives – scary, unsettling times – when we know that we need help or answers but we’re not sure what kind, or even what the problem or question is. We look and look, tearing apart our lives like we’re searching for car keys in our couch, and we come up empty-handed,”

Clothed With Christ

Where does your identity lie?
Today we celebrate Heritage Sunday. It is a day to think about who we are and whose we are as Christians and as Presbyterians. We are part of a long faith tradition. Our worship service today includes scripture and segments from the various confessions that we hold to as a church. As part of Heritage Sunday, I would like to lift up the Barmen Declaration, one of our confessions, and speak to a bit about it’s time because the writers of the Barmen Declaration drew upon Galatians and other works of Paul.
